WHAT’S THE STORY?

The plot of Maboroshi is set in a world where something quite mysterious has taken place and its eyewitness is a young boy Masamune. In the town of Mifuse, the huge steel refinery blasts, and what happens has never been seen before. The sky gets cracked with bright light passing on Mifuse from behind it. This incident reveals two things; one, no one can leave Mifuse as the borders have been somewhat blocked. Second, time has stopped ticking. While all this happens, Masamune goes to the refinery to look into the cause of this blast and there he finds a beautiful girl named Itsumi there. No one knows where she came from and why is she in Mifuse.

The plot develops into a love triangle as Maboroshi has strong feelings for Mutsumi and Itsumi. We keep on guessing with whom he would end up with. Both the girls genuinely love him and we can’t figure out who is a better match for our hero.

HOW’S THE MOVIE?

The movie opens with a bang-on drama and visual appeal that leaves us all mesmerized. It is indeed interesting to watch how the main plot of the steel refinery becomes the biggest bone of contention. However, as the story paces forward, it is pulled more into love drama. Though the love triangle between Mutsumi, Maboroshi, and Itsumi is fun to watch but the way in which it is stretched while the main issue is sidelined, definitely affects the pace of the movie.

The second half of the movie Maboroshi is not as intriguing as we were expecting. To be honest, it seemed like the second half of the movie was somewhat rushed and wrapped quickly to fix the movie in the limit of the clock. All in all, Maboroshi isn’t a bad movie but it doesn’t give us all the masterpiece we were expecting.
